Affiliation to Ken Olsen:

This remembrance is delivered on behalf of exdec, a Finnish club for the employees who have worked at Digital during 1972-1998. Exdec was founded right after Compaq acquired Digital and is still a living club with regular yearly get-togethers in Finland.

Memory

We express our warmest condolences after Ken Olsen passed away.

Finnish employees remember Ken as a moderate and informal leader with warm heart and respect for each individual whether he or she was a customer or an employee. Ken’s leadership philosophy, f. ex. Open Doors Policy and management by walking, built a strong corporate culture that gave responsibility to each and everyone. Basis for a good and close team spirit started from Ken’s informal style which was then developed further also in the Finnish subsidiary. His high moral was seen in the code of conduct of the company.

In a way, he was closer to Finnish employees as his wife Aulikki was a Finn. Finnish employees remember Ken’s visit in Finland as he walked around the office shaking hands with everybody. His way of being equal with people raised respect to him and he is remembered as a remarkable leader and a great human being.

He was the heart of the true Digital spirit that is still going strong in various Digital alumnis around the world and a founder of a most appreciated innovative pioneering ICT company.
